Incredibly Ordinary

A selection of works that aim to reimagine and enchant everyday experiences through interactive performance, installation and video.

Elena Brake is an emerging artist based in Plymouth, UK. Her exhibition showcases a selection of works that aim to reimagine and enchant everyday experiences through interactive performance, installation and video. Brake captures and exaggerates the mundane details of ordinary life, often stirring complex and unexpected emotions. The playful and light-hearted approach within her work reveals the potential for magic in domestic and public experience.

Two series of photographs record performances in the public realm where the artist takes the everyday activity of institutional cleaning into the city streets and another where participants test the public landscape for magnetic properties, creating an obscure spectacle for those who witness it. The exhibition also includes a performance artwork called Cup of Tea Going Cold [Live], which is staged by the artist as a subtle performance intervention within the space. Throughout the exhibition, as a special addition to the Café Bar menu, customers may order a cup of tea in one of 6 yellow mugs (at no cost), which will be placed on a shelf alongside the other artworks on show.  As each cup of tea stands at a different temperature, the audience are invited to watch as the cups of tea go cold ‘live’!

Tying Knots – Sat 10 Mar: 10am-12 Midday / 2pm-4pm

This participatory performance gives the audience a chance to stop and think about the simple action of tying a knot. The short, drop-in style performance allows for a relaxed encounter with the artist where participants are encouraged to experience a state of mindfulness about everyday moments we often overlook. The mundane and familiar action of tying knots provokes some interesting and unusual conversation between the artist and participant.

Tying Knots has so far been performed in Plymouth, Derby (UK Young Artists Festival 2016) and Bath (Fringe Arts Bath 2017). The knots tied have accumulated over several performances.
