Florence Foster Jenkins (PG)
UK, 2016, dir. Stephen Frears
Starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant, this heartening and powerful drama directed by Stephen Frears (Philomena, The Queen) tells the inspirational true story of the eponymous New York heiress who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great singer. The voice Florence (Streep) heard in her head was divine, but to the rest of the world it was hilariously awful. At private recitals, her devoted husband and manager, St Clair Bayfield (Grant), managed to protect Florence from the truth. The film celebrates the human spirit, the power of music and the passion of amateurs everywhere.

Dir Margaret Salmon | UK | 2016 | 4 mins
A visual and aural riff on the pioneering films of Mary Field and her early work for the Secrets of Nature series. With a score by the influential electronic music composer Matthew Herbert, Bird is about observation and environment, prompting a consideration of the ways in which cinematic tools – camera, lens, colour, movement, voice, sound – heighten and humanise our interpretation of the natural world. Screened as part of #TheArtistsCinema.
