The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Maki is set in Finland in 1962. It is based on a true story about Olli Maki, who is a champion boxer preparing for the biggest fight of his career. He must train hard and loose enough weight to qualify for the match. The problem is that Olli has fallen in love and it is stopping his from concentrating on his training.
The film is shot in black and white, which makes it feel authentic and accurate to the 1960s. It is a funny and charming film, which is just as much a love story as it is about a sporting hero.
Live Music From Slack Bird
We are delighted to announce musician Slack Bird is returning to Scandifilm all the way from Finland. He will be playing in the Café Bar before and after Tuesday’s screening.
Slack Bird is a folk music act from Jyväskylä, Central Finland consisting of one man and his banjo. Slack Bird’s music is a take on Appalachian banjo, Finnish traditional music, and punk songs sung in both Finnish and English. The release of his new album sees Slack Bird touring once again and making his fourth visit to the UK.
Olli is a boxer who has won 8 titles. He has two weeks to train for his biggest fight, which is also the biggest fight in Finland’s history.
He is expected to compete as a Featherweight, which means he must weight less than 57KG. He has two weeks to loose over 3KG. He has a lot of pressure on him to become a national hero and win his fight against the current ruling world champion who is from America.
Olli is a patient, playful and carefree character who has just realised he has fallen in love with Raija. He is well respected as a boxer but can he live up to everyone’s expectations and focus his attention in the right place.
Raija and Olli’s relationship new but it is moving fast and they are clearly falling in love with each other. Raija lives with her parents but follows Olli to the country side where is moves to train for the big fight.
Raija has a sense of humour and enjoys life. She is dedicated to Olli and supports him as a boxer but she will love him no matter what and is not interested in him winning, or loosing. She becomes bored of being on the sideline and has nothing else to do with her time while he is training. She senses Olli’s manager, Elis, does not approve of her being at his side.
Elis is Olli’s manager and was once a successful boxer himself. He hosts Olli and Raija in the two weeks before the fight. He is married to Laila and has three young children. Elis is enjoying the attention he is getting as Olli’s manager and he is driven by success. However he doesn’t approve of Olli’s relationship with Raija, which he believes is distracting Olli from his training.
Davey is an American featherweight world champion. He has won the last four world champion titles fights and has more experience than Olli.
