Young In Hong

A solo exhibition by South Korean artist Young In Hong that encompassed drawing, textiles, sound installation and performance, to explore processes and ideas around authorship, translation and reinterpretation.

Hong’s large-scale hand-and-machine embroidered textile works were based on archival imagery pertaining to moments of collective experience of protest and demonstration in recent Korean history and allude to the politics and economics of the (predominantly female) global textiles industry.

Her most recent works reinterpreted elements drawn from pre and post-war photographs as the components of a musical score. Interpreted in turn by the artist and by other musicians, these scores formed the basis of new sound works that play within the exhibition space.

The exhibition was initiated by Spacex in partnership with Exeter Phoenix and formed part of the Korean Cultural Centre UK’s Korea/UK season 2017-18, a celebration of the relationship between the UK and South Korea which saw cultural events, exhibitions and activities take place in both countries throughout 2017/18.
