ALL SUMMER FESTIVAL EVENTS ARE PRESENTED BY EXETER PHOENIX IN ASSOCIATION WITH EXETER SUMMER FESTIVAL.
Tue 13 Jul, 8pm, £12 (£10)
The man who was a big influence on both Paul Simon and Bob Dylan, Martin Carthy has long been regarded as the Godfather of English folk music – a renowned solo performer of traditional songs in a very distinctive style, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. His style is marked by the use of alternative tunings and a strongly percussive picking style that emphasises the melody.
Sat 26 Jun, 8pm, £15 (£13)
Phil Hammond, the GP, writer, broadcaster and possibly the only comedian to have appeared at a public inquiry is back with a hilarious show about health issues we’ve all known. He is rude about everything (politicians, doctors, death, drugs, sex, himself) but in a nice way. Free sick notes for all.

With its four vocalists, four guitarists and rock solid rhythm section The Congo Allstars create some of the most explosive dance music on the planet. The 12-piece bring soukous up to date with funky rumba beats. With leader and master percussionist Koko Kayinda directing the band expect a sizzling show that confirms why Congolese soukous is one of the most passionate types of dance music in the world.

A new Curious performance made in
collaboration with film-maker Andrew
Kötting, composer Graeme Miller and
performers Claudia Barton and Joseph
Young. It is about gut feelings; fight,
flight and freeze reactions; impulse, love
and undefended moments. Designed
for life-raft sized groups of audience
members at a time, the performance
is set in the belly of a whale.
Film and live action merge with
sampled sound and siren song as
the audience is cast adrift with only
stories
and half-remembered truths
to sustain them. The Curious quest is
‘autobiological’; to expose, from the
inside, truth and lies, biography and
mythology; to probe how we compile
and edit the stories of our ‘selves’.

Thu 8 Jul, 8pm, £12 (£10)
Django à la Créole is the fusion of Gypsy swing with hot syncopations from the streets of New Orleans, the Caribbean and Brazil, led by New Orleans-based clarinetist Evan Christopher, whose style is steeped in the tradition of early jazz masters such as Sidney Bechet. Together with guitarists David Blenkhorn, Dave Kelbie, and bassist Sebastien Girardot, the quartet celebrates the music of the legendary Django Reinhardt and enlivens swingera classics with fresh interpretations and virtuosic improvisations.
‘A forthright sound and a hungry energy’ – NEW YORK TIMES
Fri 9 Jul, doors 8.30pm £18, standing
This legendary funk-soul-jazz
saxophonist was an integral part of not
one but two revolutions in black music.
In the 60s he was a key member of the
JB’s and the prominent soloist on many
of James Brown’s hits. In the 70s he
left to join up
with George Clinton in
Parliament and Funkadelic. In the 90s
he was also part of Prince’s band but
has since built up an enviable reputation
for his own solo work. His band now
includes other illustrious players
with James Brown and Parliament
credentials – Rodney Skeet Curtis,
Ron Tooley, Bruno Speight, as well
as
master trombonist Dennis Rollins.
