Lizzy Parks

Sun 7 Mar, 8pm, £8 (£6), in the Voodoo Lounge
At 29, the soulful Exeter-born jazz singer/songwriter Lizzy Parks already has three critically acclaimed albums under her belt. ‘Raise the Roof’, her debut album for the Tru Thoughts label, was a euphoric introduction - with rich, dramatic orchestration from fellow Exonian Riaan Vosloo it embodies Lizzy`s fresh and modern twist on a singer-songwriter tradition, encompassing elements of various styles from retro jazz and boogie soul to ambient modern experimental music.

She went on to collaborate with the likes of Nostalgia 77, with whom her first piece, ‘The Hope Suite’, was nominated for Gilles Peterson's BBC Radio 1 ‘Worldwide Awards Jazz Track of the Year’. This special performance for Vibraphonic sees Lizzy - currently based in France - perform a stunning collection of beautifully crafted, stripped back and re-imagined acoustic guitar and vocal versions of songs from her most recent 2009 album ‘This and That’, imbued with the characteristic playfulness, sense of romance, warmth yet lightness of touch that sets her apart as one of the UK’s most up and coming jazz singers.

Dub Pistols & Pama International

Fri 12 Mar, doors 8.30pm, £12.50, standing, Over 16s
The Dub Pistols formed in the mid-90s out of the chaos and energy erupting from the Heavenly Social-spawned big beat scene. Barry Ashworth and Jason O'Bryan were determined to mirror their wildly-diverse tastes in similar fashion to heroes like The Clash and Specials, who spectacularly broke out of punk's confines to embrace other musical forms like reggae. Their trademark style utilises special guest singers and MC's to front energetic big beat, dub, reggae and ska-infused tunes - Terry Hall from The Specials is a regular collaborator. Fourth album, ‘Rum & Coke’, continues the journey, this time using grooves more as vehicles for a songwriting frenzy which has resulted in their most mature album yet.

Reggae collective Pama International are another band with a Specials connection, featuring as they do Lynval Golding from the latter and they also supported them last year. They utilise classic sounds of yesteryear with a social commentary - think King Tubby's dub stylings meet the southern soul sounds of the 60s Stax label.

Speech Debelle & Gift of Gab

Sat 13 Mar, doors 8.30pm, £12 (£10), standing, Over 16s
A surprise but welcome winner of last year's Mercury Music Prize with her debut album ‘Speech Therapy’, Speech Debelle, like all musicians worth listening to, draws you into her universe and makes you glad you visited. ‘Searching’ was her debut single and a perfect example of the offbeat, folky production that litters the album, as well as the whisper-in-the-ear quality of her vocals, the honeyed tone of her warm voice contrasting with her mature, articulate lyrics and poetic swagger. Renowned for her ground-breaking range of influences and contributors, one thing is certain hip hop has never been done in quite this way before.

"Intelligent, raw, poetic, honest verses cruise over high quality orchestral production" - BBC (on Speech Debelle)

Sierra Maestra

Sun 14 Mar, doors 8pm, £12 (£10), standing
Sierra Maestra are the guardians of the Cuban son music tradition. Their infectious dance music never fails to get crowds up on their feet andthe band were instrumental in the revival of the genre in the late 1970s and 80s. Named after the mountain range on the east of Cuba, and birthplace of the son, the group’s aim was to revive and re-introduce this popular Cuban music style from the 1920s and 30s to the contemporary mainstream audience.

’Master musicians, the band swap smiles of appreciation for each others’ solos in performances built around musical conversations. This deceptively unpretentious performance was packed with musical thrills.’

Haunting Jazz Scores:
Knife In The Water & Rosemary’s Baby

Thu 18 Mar, 6pm & 8.15pm, £4.50 (£3.50)
These films are being shown as part of the ‘Polish Film Festival in Exeter – Kinoteka on Tour 2010’, not only celebrating the work of director Roman Polanski but also that of soundtrack composer and jazz pianist Krzysztof Komeda, probably the most important artist in the history of Polish Jazz. The Oscar-nominated ‘Knife In The Water’ (1963 / 94 min / 6pm) is a subtly chilling tale about a married couple who pick up a young hitchhiker to join them on a boating trip provides a background for an agonisingly tense look at male posturing and ego.

In ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ (1968, 136 min, 8.15pm) the mix of Polański’s ordinary settings and Komeda’s score of jazz, 60's pop and unique gothic orchestra lead to a truly disturbing effect in this low key thriller with a shocking twist. Komeda's powerful and chilling theme, ‘The Lullaby’, is one of the most memorable of all horror film themes.

This event is part of the ‘Polish Film Festival in Exeter - Kinoteka on Tour 2010’, which is financially assisted by Polish Cultural Institute and Exeter City Council. Further information can be found at www.polishfilmfestival.exeter.pl

Buy tickets for both screenings for £6.50 (£5.50). Films included in this promotion are ‘Knife in the Water’ Thu 18 Mar & ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ Thu 18 Mar. Contact the Box Office on 01392 667080.

Johnny Winter and his Band,
with Julian Piper's Jelly Roll

Fri 19 Mar, doors 8pm, £22 adv/£25 door, standing
It's difficult to think of many blues-rock icons who have stood the test of time quite as well as the Texas White Lightning, Johnny Winter. Currently enjoying a remarkable renaissance, his sensational appearance on Eric Clapton's recent ‘Crossroads’ show and ferocious slide guitar soloing on ‘Highway 61 Revisited’ proved he can still make the sparks fly in the blistering Texas guitar tradition, stretching back to T Bone Walker, the late Stevie Ray Vaughan and ZZ Top.

'Winter's God-given talent ripped off some of the most amazing guitar I've heard' – JAZZ REVIEW
