Analogue To Digital Music Expo

Byte size workshops and masterclasses

Sat 6 Mar, 10.30am-4.30pm, Exeter Phoenix & Sound Gallery studios

A2D Expo provides a whole day of rolling workshops, masterclasses and demos held in studio spaces throughout the building and suitable for all ages. Admission is included in the entry price but the following workshops/masterclasses must be booked in advance through Sound Gallery studios due to limited spaces www.sound-gallery.net 01392 495301.

Computers Live

Ableton Live 8 workshops delivered by Martin Delaney the U.K.s official Ableton demonstrator (writes the Ableton column for Future Music)

Digital Recording

Propellerhead Reason and Record workshops delivered by Joe Morretti the U.K’s official Propellerhead demonstrator – an Apple-certified teacher.

Soft Synths

Time & Space deliver workshops/masterclass on their exciting products including Spectrasonics - Omnisphere - and the brand new Trillion bass synth.

Live sampling/Ableton Live masterclass

Masterclass run by live performance artist Jon Sterckx. Learn how to create tracks entirely using acoustic & vocal percussion played, sampled, & processed live in performance. This masterclass will explain the techniques involved in using Ableton Live software for live sampling and performance.

Light Graffiti

Sun 7 Mar, 2-5pm, £5, in the Black Box, 12-18 year olds
Introductory workshop run by Simon Egan. Learn how to make and use LED throwies to create light graffiti. Throwies consist of a lithium battery, an LED and a magnet taped together. Throw it up on to a metal surface and you can create a non-destructive graffiti or light display.



Build Your Own Reverb

Incorporating DIY into DAW

Sat 13 Mar, 10.30am-4.30pm, £10, Sound Gallery & Exeter Phoenix

A chance to create a home-made spring reverb unit and to put it into use in a recording studio setting. Explore the way that different components work (sound, speakers, reversing speakers to make microphones, Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), Analogue to Digital (A/D) conversion, and the uses of reverb). Make different lengths of reverb, explore different methods of housing, varied pickup spacing and then apply these DIY reverb units to pre-recorded multitrack sessions in the studio.For details: 01392 495301



Introduction To VJ'ing

Sat 13 Mar, 11am–2.30pm, Free, 12-18 year olds, Exeter Phoenix

Drop in session for a chance to get behind the scenes of a live VJ set-up. An informal, playful and tactile introduction to VJ'ing. Discover, software, hardware and multi- screen projection. Ask questions and get involved in the mix. No need to book.



Solarference

Vocal sampling and live electronics

Sat 13 Mar, 12-4pm, £10, Exeter Phoenix & Sound Gallery

Learn how to sample and manipulate live sound for performance using microphones alongside laptops equipped with a unique piece of sampling software developed by Solarference. Grab sound bytes, arrange beats, stretch or freeze time and create musical textures. Software is especially designed to be easy to pick up, even for those who are new to using audio software. Workshop participants will explore extended vocal techniques, sound making toys and objects. All these sounds will be sampled live to create a unique improvised electronic sound-score of beats, textures and atmospheric layers which we will record and make available for all participants to download from our website.



DJ Skills

Sat 13 Mar, 1.30-5pm, Free, in the Black Box, 12-18 year olds
Do you want to drive those wheels of steel? An introductory course in turntablism and mixing skills for beginners, preceded by a showcase for the VJ workshop. Free but bookable.



Video Mapping

Sun 14 Mar, 2-5pm, £10, in the Black Box, 16 years +
Learn the art of video mapping using Photoshop and Modul8. Video footage will be provided to enable you to concentrate on creating your individual video mask to fit a selection of objects; geodesic structure, cubes and tree branches.

The course runs over 3 hours and will end with a final show in the late afternoon. Must have a basic understanding of Photoshop and Mac OS. Please contact Phoenix Digital for details: 01392 667066

Jazz Improvisation for Saxes & Brass

Sun 21 Mar, 2-5pm, £10, in the Drama Studio, 16 years +
Led by popular and accomplished tenor saxophonist Pete Canter (www.petecanter.com) this taster workshop is for beginner improvisers on saxophone and brass. Working in a small group (max 10), and accompanied by a rhythm section, the afternoon will give players an idea of what to practise and how to approach soloing on a selection of easy jazz standards. Participants should have at least basic facility on their instruments, an ability to play scales in common keys and to be able to read and play melodies for easy jazz standards.
