Laura Loft

Associate Artist 2016

After achieving BA Hons Music Performance at Dartington College of Arts, Laura established herself as a musician, singing for production company Friction, various jazz bands and played cello for BBC 2 Young Chorister of the Year but found she longed to be back in the inspiring landscapes of Devon.

Since returning to the South West, Laura founded Loft’s Music Shed in 2013, having previously developed a pilot scheme of successful songwriting workshops. She is a trained support worker & music workshop leader with recent work for Plymouth Music Zone & Exeter Phoenix.

Lofts Music Shed write and deliver creative acoustic songwriting workshops for 13-19 year olds. They are aimed at inspiring young singer songwriters to develop their songwriting skills and increasing confidence using new and exciting creative approaches to think imaginatively and ‘out side the box’ in terms of crafting new song ideas.  These clubs & workshops are delivered in a safe and nurturing environment and aim to increase confidence using creativity.

‘The best part of being an associate artist was being affiliated with the arts venue and the kindness and approachability of the staff who were one minded, flexible and supportive of new ideas.

I started my own project to highlight and promote my year as an associate artist. At the end of the year I also had discussions about starting up Young Singer Songwriter Club again and went for funding which I am really excited to have won. It will be great to offer this and some extra support for young musicians in the city. This group will also be an ambassador voice for Exeter Phoenix Creative Hub.’
