Carol (15)

UK, USA, France, 2015. 120 mins. Dir. Todd Haynes

Cate Blanchett stars in this superbly realised love story of two women who defy societal conformity in 1950’s Manhattan. Based upon Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novel The Price of Salt, Haynes presents a visually rich and deeply romantic, honest portrayal of their affair, embarked upon after meeting as wide-eyed shopgirl and elegant customer in a department store in the pre Christmas rush. With clear nods to Lean’s Brief Encounter, the most classic of love stories, their relationship develops into a deep connection that frees each of the women from the frustrations of working mundanity and the loneliness of a unfulfilling marriage.

Selected for Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival 2015 and previewed by the BFI as part of their national Love season in November 2015, Carol is an exquisite exploration of female homosexuality in 1950’s New York.
