Dir. Lucile Hadihalilovic, France, 2014, 81 mins
Set in a mysterious, isolated volcanic island populated only by women and young boys, Lucile Hadihalilovics first feature since 2004s Innocence transports us into an eerie, spellbindingly weird world like no other.
10 year old Nicolas lives a sombre and isolated life with his mother in a remote seaside community. As he reaches puberty Nicolas is forced to confront the enigma of this world without men and his own impending admission to the island’s sinister hospital, where only the healthy are welcomed within its forbidding walls. Increasingly suspicious that his mother and the nurses are lying to him and that something more sinister is going on, Nicholas is determined to find out what they are up to. And what he discovers signals the beginning of a nightmare, as a disturbing vision of conception, birth and child-rearing eerily begins to unfurl.
