Harmonium (Fuchi ni Tatsu) (12A)

Dir. Kôji Fukada. Japan, 120 mins, 2016.

After making a mark in Japanese cinema with Human Comedy in Tokyo, Hospitalité and Sayonara, Fukada centres his sixth film, Harmonium – which won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at Cannes 2016 – on the damaging effects of a mysterious stranger.

Toshio invites an old acquaintance, Yasaka (just released from prison) to come and live with his family above the small workshop that he owns with his wife, Akie, and their daughter, Hotaru.

Hiring him as an assistant with his persistent charm and goodwill starts teaching their daughter Hotaru to play the harmonium. As his relationship with the family develops it begins to highlight the loneliness and divisions within it; and soon his presence twists into something oppressive and frightening.

Director Kôji Fukada is a master of incremental development which draws on a dark, subtle and gut-wrenching performances that draw the audience in.
