The first Estonian film ever to receive a nomination for a foreign-language Oscar, Tangerines is a compassionate tale focusing on opposing ideologies during the conflicts of former Soviet countries.

Set in the midst of growing conflict between Georgia and Abkhazian separatists after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the film tells the story of two Estonian immigrant farmers who decide to stay in Georgia long enough to harvest their crop of tangerines.

When the war reaches their doorstep, the farmers find themselves taking in two wounded soldiers from opposite sides of the conflict. Their extended period of recovery has an unexpected humanising effect on the men, leaving time to ponder the futility of war and the true nature of honour.

Although the subject of civil war within the former Soviet countries has been tackled in other movies, this retelling is one of the most concise and affecting’
